Last-Minute Magic: Mastering Your Impromptu Disney Vacation
Recently-returned Happily Ever After was reason enough for many loyal fans to make an impromptu trip to the Magic Kingdom!
Somewhere between work, school, sports, chores and trying to find time for yourself, it’s all-too easy to get overwhelmed and imagine an impromptu escape from the everyday.
Typically, this elation wears off, and we come back down to earth after picturing the to-do list that comes along with planning a trip – especially when that trip is to Walt Disney World.
We’re here to tell you that you don’t have to shake that excitement.
Instead of just daydreaming about what you might do, let us reassure you that a spontaneous getaway doesn’t have to mean sacrificing what you love, or paying well-above sticker price for a top-notch Disney vacation. You don’t have to have every detail locked down, and you certainly don’t have to do it alone.
Take Advantage of Eleventh-Hour Deals
Airline and hotel rates are often dictated by demand. The closer the calendar nears the dates you want to travel, you might find deals even better than if you started planning months earlier.
As a group that travels quite a bit, we frequently set alerts for cheap flights and rooms as they come up. You may not even have a spontaneous trip on the brain when a deal comes along that you can’t afford to pass up.
Disney even releases surprise deals of their own. Just this week, a new summer ticket offer was announced that could mean big ticket savings for guests visiting the parks in the next few months.
With the Magical Vacations Travel Price Watch Program, our agents are constantly scanning for the newest discounts to see what promotions apply to your vacation. When Disney releases new room or ticket sales and packages, you can be sure that your agent is evaluating the details to make sure you’re getting the best bang for your buck.
Skip the Planning Pressure/Be Flexible
While we love heading into a Walt Disney World trip with a plan or itinerary in mind, there’s something to be said for avoiding many of the pre-trip benchmarks.
For instance, you may be traveling soon enough that the 60-day window for Advanced Dining Reservations has passed. This doesn’t mean you’re relegated solely to quick service and snack carts when you really want a table service or signature dining experience. In fact, dining reservations are constantly opening as other groups release them within their own cancellation windows.
If you and your group are flexible with where or when you eat, there are always options opening up on the My Disney Experience App. Keep the app handy and check throughout the day to see what hidden gems may be available. You can also read up on more of our tips and tricks for feeding your group when you’re short on planning time.
The same sentiment goes for Walt Disney World Resorts. You may have a favorite “home base,” but if availability is low, last-minute trips are a perfect excuse to try out somewhere new. You may step out of your comfort zone with a theme room, new location, or even upgrade to a tier you’ve not yet tried. You never know, a last-minute reservation could become your go-to resort for future trips.
Don’t Overthink
A spontaneous trip to Walt Disney World can seem daunting, especially if you’ve spent months (or years) planning similar vacations in the past.
However, instead of feeling like you’ll miss out on the “big ticket” rides and attractions, you may end up pleasantly surprised at seeing Disney from a new perspective.
There’s less pressure to not “miss out” when you allow yourself to enjoy the parks and property at a new pace. It may mean including one or more resort days where you finally enjoy the pools and activities that drew you to the resort in the first place. In the parks, it may mean exploring areas that you never thought to in past – like heading to Animal Kingdom and walking the animal trails or taking in a bird show instead of sprinting to Flight of Passage.
Remember that not every trip to Walt Disney World needs to look the same, and there’s no wrong way to have a Disney vacation.
Why You Should Visit This Summer
If you’re still looking for a “reason” to book a last-minute trip this summer, there’s more than enough to keep you occupied.
The EPCOT International Flower & Garden Festival runs through July 5th, quickly followed by the EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival, beginning July 27th. Festivals are one of our absolute favorite ways to explore EPCOT. Grab your group and taste your way through World Showcase, take in the entertainment and pop-ups, or pose for snapshots in front of the festive décor across the park.
Disney After Hours are great option to get more park access – and likely shorter wait times for the rides you thought you’d miss. These ticketed events unlock an extra three hours in the parks, plus ice cream, popcorn, drinks and other fun bites along the way. Tickets are limited, so be sure to ask an agent if you want to take advantage of fewer crowds and extra evening park time.
Plus, when it’s time to call it a night, you can sleep better knowing you saved up to 25% off of your Disney Resort hotel with the current room deals just waiting for you to claim them.
There’s never a wrong time to visit Walt Disney World, but with a little creative thinking and flexibility, there’s also no reason that a spontaneous trip to Orlando should be any less magical than one you’ve spent all year planning.
